How much time do you spend on car maintenance? If you’re like the majority of other people the chances are it’s not as much as it should be.
Car maintenance is extremely important however, especially when it comes to looking after older cars. There are more likely to be more problems with car maintenance the older your car is, and if you don’t keep up to speed with your car maintenance duties you could find yourself facing a larger repair bill further down the road.
In truth, basic car maintenance doesn’t have to be complicated. Check your oil and water regularly and certainly before any long trip, and make sure your tyres aren’t worn. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the MOT will serve as a car maintenance exercise – you need to be checking your car far more regularly than once a year.
A lot of people view car maintenance as something that needs to be done when something goes wrong. But that isn’t the best view of car maintenance to take. It’s far better to think of it as an ongoing responsibility, because regular car maintenance can prevent some repairs having to be done altogether – and that can save you money.
It’s important to recognise what your limits are with car maintenance though, because if you don’t know what you are doing your car maintenance efforts could cause more harm than good. If you encounter any problems and you’re not sure what to do, then always seek the help of a qualified mechanic to take on the car maintenance role.
Of course you can always get car maintenance tips from the internet and from friends and relatives, but again, if you don’t fully understand what you should be doing then the job is best left to someone who does. Don’t become one of those drivers who cause more damage by trying to save money on mechanics in the first place!
