Buying another car is always going to be an exciting time. But nowadays you need to think about the car tax that will apply as well. Car tax isn’t just a case of one rate for six months and another one for twelve months any more – the car tax rules have changed considerably depending on how environmentally friendly your car is.
In short, your car tax could be as little as £15 at current car tax rates for a car that runs on an alternative fuel, and as much as £400 for the least environmentally friendly car of all. These car tax rates are both applicable for a year, so it gives you some idea of how important it is to think about car tax when you are considering purchasing a new car.
The best thing to do is to note down the details of any car you have your eye on, and then check what car tax you would be paying if you bought it. What seems like a bargain up front may not turn out to be a bargain at all if the car tax is in one of the higher brackets. The dealer may be able to tell you what the car tax will be, and on occasion an existing car tax disc will still be displayed in the vehicle when you go and view it.
You may even find it is worth spending more initially on a car that will mean less car tax to pay over the time that you own it. Always do your sums before you buy, and remember that although you will save a certain amount of money by buying twelve months car tax in advance, it does mean having to fork out more cash up front.
