Can You Increase Your Vehicle Safety?...
August 9, 2008
Having an older car means you are unlikely to have the full range of vehicle safety features that brand new cars have. You may have an alarm but the most recent technologies will certainly not be present.
But even if your car has seen better days there is a lot you can do to increase your vehicle safety without spending hundreds of pounds in the process. While older cars aren’t as prone to being stolen to sell on to other people, they can still fall victim to joyriding, and opportunistic theft is also something you may be in danger of.
Quite often a few extra seconds is all it takes to make sure your vehicle safety level is as high as possible. If you have anything valuable in your car you should make the effort to put it out of sight – ideally in the boot, or failing that, tucked safely under the front seats.
If you have any smaller valuables that you don’t want to carry with you, invest in a small car safe which you can lock round one of the seats before sliding it underneath it. Vehicle safety isn’t just about keeping your car as safe as possible; it’s also about keeping what’s inside your car as safe as possible.
Vehicle safety can also be enhanced by putting good common sense into practice. Whenever you leave your car parked overnight try and park it in a public place under a streetlamp if you can. It will detract thieves from breaking into it. Having simple items such as steering locks may not put off determined thieves but casual ones looking for a quick steal will go elsewhere.
Understanding and doing everything you can to make sure your vehicle safety is as good as possible is a crucial part of being a car owner. It doesn’t matter how old or young your car is, the better you take care of it and its contents the less likely you are to run into problems in future.
