Are Low Tax Cars Right For You?
The chances are that if you have had to tax cars recently, the amount you had to pay to tax cars will have gone up. It’s not just a case of ‘one size fits all’ any more when it comes to road tax, cars are now split into all kinds of different categories depending on how efficient they are to run – and more importantly how good they are to the environment.
What this means is that when we look at road tax, cars which drink up the petrol and have no real control over their emissions will pay by far the highest amount of road tax possible. With road tax, cars which eject over 255 grams of carbon per kilometre will have to pay £455 a year.
That is a huge sum and a huge rise on the road tax cars had to pay only a couple of years ago, but if you switched to a VW Polo you wouldn’t be paying any road tax at all.
So is it worth getting a low emission, environmentally friendly car? It seems that when it comes to road tax, cars that are environmentally friendly will save you a lot of money in the long run (and in some cases, the short run as well).
Consider your long term road tax costs as well as insurance costs when you are thinking of changing your car. By focusing on road tax, cars that are smaller and stay within the lowest emissions band as set by the government will save you a bundle. Compared to the top band you would save nearly a thousand pounds over the course of just two years.
So think carefully before you buy your next car. If you focus only on the price shown on the windscreen you could be paying more than you think for it.
